Ida the Deer

‘Ida, the Deer’ tells Kimberly family tale

The Historical Society’s most recent acquisition is a small 16-page book written by Helen Kimberly Stuart about her father, John Alfred Kimberly. The book is titled “Ida the Deer: A True Story of Pioneer Days in Wisconsin.” It tells the story of a little deer the Kimberly children, Alfred and Emma, adopted after they moved to Neenah from New York. The deer was a pet and lived with the family in their house on Wisconsin Avenue. The children loved to put paper shoes on Ida’s feet and let her run around on the polished top of the dining room table! One day Ida got loose and ran off into the woods where she managed to save the lives of the poor starving Hedge family.
